{\b Thomas Edward Brown}. {\b Date of Birth}.: 5 May 1830 {\b Date of Death}.: 30 October 1897 {\b Works}. English poet. He wrote narrative and lyric poetry, some of it in the Manx dialect. These include Betsey Lee (1873), Foc'c's'le Yarns (1881, The Doctor (1887), The Manx Witch (1889) and Old John (1893). Also well-known are poems such as Vespers, Disguises, An Autumn Trinket and The Schooner. {\b Featured Works}. He received his education at King William's College, Isle of Man, and at Christ Church and Oriel Colleges, Oxford. He was elected Fellow of Oriel in 1854 and took holy orders in 1855. A clergyman and schoolmaster, he was vice-principal of King William's College, then headmaster of the Crypt School at Gloucester and finally, master at Clifton College. He also served as curate at St. Barnabas, Bristol. His writing is characterised by his use of the Manx dialect and themes dealing with Manx life.
