Poet and prelate, Henry King was the son of the Bishop of London, John King, who had ordained John Donne. Henry became the older poet's ardent friend and admirer. He was educated at Westminster and at Christ Church, Oxford. He took his Doctorate of Divinity in 1625. In 1642 he became Bishop of Chichester, but was ejected by Parliament in 1643. Charles II later gave him back his see. He is mainly known for his elegies (mournful poems for the dead) on Royal persons and his friends who included John Donne, Izaak Walton and Ben Jonson. His best known poem is 'An Exequy to His Matchless Never to be Forgotten Friend' which was written for his wife Anne Berkeley who died in 1624. An unauthorised volume of his poetry appeared in 1657. He is regarded only as a minor poet of his day.
