Arthur W.E. O'Shaughnessy was a poet. Born in London, he was privately educated. He became a junior assistant in the library of the British Museum. Having been transferred to the National History Department, he became an authority on fish and reptiles. During his lifetime he published various books of poetry, including the above, and with his wife co-wrote a book for children called Toyland . His poetry is generally associated with that of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the other Pre-Raphaelites in that it characterised by vivid images and innovative meter. Rossetti said: 'Colour and meter, these are the true patents of nobility in painting and poetry, taking precedence of all intellectual claims'.
