{\b Sun-Tzu}. Born and died in the 4th Century BC Sun-Tzu's The Art Of War, or Ping-fa, is one of the most ancient of all tracts on warfare and strategy. It is marked in particular by an insistence upon the impossibility of separating questions of military strategy from wider political questions. In more modern times the tract has remained important: it was used by, among others, the Chinese Communist army in the wars against both Japan, from 1931 to 1945, and the anti-Communist Chinese nationalists.
